Mobile Applications We Recommend
No one can deny that technology has improved and lengthened our lives. And nowhere is this more exciting than mobile applications related to CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation).
For many years EMS (Emergency Medical Services) has had the same tools available to doctors in a hospital or emergency room to treat victims of SCA (Sudden Cardiac Arrest), but when it happens outside a hospital there is a huge disadvantage ~ TIME! Your chances of surviving a cardiac arrest without CPR and a defibrillator decrease by 10% every minute. With the average response time of trained personnel being between 4 and 9 minutes your chances have already decreased to 40% to 90%. Bystander CPR and AED use SAVES LIVES!
Our #1 and #2 picks for mobile apps are PulsePoint Respond and PulsePoint AED which are explained below as well as in more detail on another page, but there are many other useful apps for both laypersons and professional rescuers. We will continue to share them here as we find them.
PulsePoint empowers individuals, within covered communities, with the ability to provide life-saving assistance to victims of cardiac arrest. Application users who have indicated they are trained in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) are notified if someone nearby is having a cardiac emergency and may require CPR. If the medical emergency is in a public place, the application uses sophisticated location-based services to alert trained citizens in the immediate vicinity of the need for CPR. The application also directs these citizen rescuers to the exact location of the closest public access Automated External Defibrillator (AED).
Help build the most comprehensive registry of AEDs for use during emergencies. When a cardiac emergency strikes, finding an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) can help save a life. But that takes knowing where AEDs are located. PulsePoint AED lets you report and update AED locations so that emergency responders – nearby citizens trained in CPR or local firefighters, police or medics -- can find an AED close to them when a cardiac emergency occurs.

The American Stroke Association is proud to introduce the “Spot a Stroke F.A.S.T.” app, now available in English and Spanish for free download. Stroke is a leading cause of disability and number four cause of death in the United States, behind diseases of the heart and cancer. Approximately 795,000 individuals will have a stroke each year; of these, 167,000 individuals will die and more will suffer a major disability. F.A.S.T. is an easy way to remember the sudden signs of a stroke. When you can spot the signs, you'll know quickly that you need to call 9-1-1 for help. This is important because the sooner a stroke victim gets to the hospital, the sooner they'll get treatment. And that can make a remarkable difference in their recovery.
Smart911 is a free service used by public safety agencies across the country to enhance communication and response for their community. It can be used by 9-1-1 agencies to quickly send first responders to the location of an emergency with more information, by emergency management to better plan for and respond to disasters, and by municipalities to send emergency notifications to their citizens.
By creating a Safety Profile for your family, you are providing potentially life-saving information to public safety officials at the time when they need it most.
The 9-1-1 service of Smart911 allows you to create a Safety Profile for your household which will proactively provide details on your family and home that 9-1-1 may need in order to send help in the event of an emergency.
The emergency management service of Smart911 allows you to answer questions about yourself, your family and your household that will help emergency management officials plan for and respond to disasters by being able to understand the needs of their community.
The emergency notification service of Smart911 allows you to opt-in to receive alerts from your community through a variety of communication channels including voice, text or email.
While every community may offer a different combination of services to their citizens, your Smart911 account will allow you to opt-in and manage all services available to you in one place. Smart911 is free, private and secure and endorsed by citizens, community groups and public safety officials. Smart911’s availability is constantly expanding as communities across the country are implementing one or all of the three services offered to enhance their public safety services.
